Hi Mick! First of all, welcome to Chica Sombra, feel at home. Tell me, how is a normal day in your life?

¡Hola, Mick!

It’s a very simple life when I’m not shooting. I get up, read the paper, work out, then head next door to my office/studio, where I’m usually writing something. Sometimes it’s planning the next POST MORTEM podcast, contacting potential guests, writing up the introductions and recording them here, where I am writing this now.
On the other hand, when I’m shooting, it’s almost always out of town, usually in Canada, and it’s up at dawn, working into the night!

As an expert in adapting Stephen King's work, both the small and the big screen. Which of your latest works would you work with?

I assume you mean his Works. I just finished Reading King’s newest novel, THE INSTITUTE, which I found to be wonderful, amazing and imaginative. I think they’ve already made a deal to turn into a movie, but that’s something I’d love to get my hands on.

You have recently released the miniseries "The Stand" on Blu-ray. How is the reception being? Do you think every good collector should have it?

A very leading question! Of course every film fan should have it! But seriously, it has been amazingly well received. Amazon sold out of their first shipment on the day it came out! I’m very excited about it, because Paramount and CBS did something I never dreamed would happen because of the trouble and expense: they went back to the negative, and completely restored it to high definition for the very first time. Because we shot it 25 years ago, it was shot on 16mm film, and all the postproduction was done in standard definition, because there was no such thing as high definition yet. But now it looks much better that it ever has, even when it was originally broadcast.

¡Ah!

One of my favorite films in your filmography is "Sleepwalkers" What would you say if someone showed up with a remake project about the film? Would you dare to interact with him in some way?

Well, I wouldn’t want to remake it myself, as I try not to do the same thing twice. But I would certainly wish anyone who chose to do it well. I’m going next week to visit the set of the new STAND next week in Vancouver, just to watch and lend my support. I’m thrilled to see how it turns out, and expect it to be very different. There have been good remakes, and bad remakes. I’d love to see a good remake of SLEEPWALKERS; not so much for a bad one.

A facet of you little known in Spain is that of a novel writer. What joys does it give you? How is it different from writing scripts? Any title that you are preparing for us as the next novelty?

I love writing for the page, because it’s not just a blueprint. You are creating the finished product single-hadedly. There are no compromises because of budgets or studios, or locations or casting. It is using words for the love of the words and ideas themselves, and take the reader into any place you can imagine, even inside the mind, which you can’t really do in cinema. Screenwriting in a blueprint for a very collaborative process; fiction writing is very solitary and intimate, and potentially deeper.
Next year, Fangoria is going to publish a collection of one of my novels and four novellas—including a Brand new one—in a single volume, THE EVIL THAT WE DO: THE MICK GARRIS COLLECTION, and I’m excited to get that out there.

In addition to cinema and literature, you are also passionate about podcasts. Tell us about Post Mortem.

Post Mortem springs from my very early youth. When I was in high school, just a teenager, I started interviewing artists who fascinated me. I loved to learn how the creative people I admired thought, where their inspirations came from, all of that. My first interview was with Ray Bradbury; my second was Rod Serling. Later I got into music journalism, still as a teen, and interviewed people as varied at Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Frank Zappa.
I did a series of televisión interviews for a movie channel in LA called the Z Channel, including Spielberg, Landis, and a ton of others. Thirty years later I did them in POST MORTEM the TV show, for the FearNet channel. That morphed into the podcast, and it still keeps me fascinated to have conversations with creative people I admire. I swear I learn something from every one of them.

Can you tell us something about your next projects?

¿Puedes contarnos algo sobre tus próximos proyectos?

We are talking about doing a sequel to our movie NIGHTMARE CINEMA, and I’m in conversation about a number of other topics. I’ve just completed a new spec screenplay that we are going to find a home for shortly, and I continue to travel and work and do all the things I love to do.

Finally, thank you a thousand times and ask you one last question: are you happy?

I couldn’t be happier. I’m lucky to lead a life I wouldn’t change with anyone. I am grateful every day. Thanks!

¡Gracias!
