First of all, thank you, Mr. Mitchell for taking the time to answer these questions. On behalf of the website Chica Sombre and myself, Jorge Capote, it is an honour to be able to have a chat about your work. 

First question, as usual in Chica Sombra, is:  How does a day in David Mitchell’s life look like?

La primera pregunta, como suele pasar en la web ‘Chica Sombra’ es: ¿Cómo es un día en la vida de David Mitchell? 

Thank you Jorge, and thanks for doing this in English.  This honour is mine.  I didn’t know ‘Capote’ is a Hispanic family name.  I learn something every day.  I’ll do this right away, before your kind email gets lost in my ever-filling inbox…

Well, today I’m writing this on the kitchen table at our home in West Cork, Ireland, waiting for a friendly farmer called John to come and empty our septic tank with his giant Poo Hoover.  Farmers are busy people, and you never know what ‘I’ll come tomorrow’ means.  Of course, not every day can be as glamorous as this.  Usually I try to get some writing done – at least one scene for my neglected next novel.  I’m also working in a virtual writers room for a TV show for Apple at the moment, so from 3pm to 9pm I’m busy with that.  Then I have my duties (and pleasures) as a Dad to organise.  Shopping, cooking, cleaning, driving my kids to where they need to be.  Every day is different, within the regular parameters.  Like anyone’s day.

Gracias, Jorge, y gracias por hacer esto en inglés. El honor es mío. No sabía que “Capote” era un apellido hispano. Se aprende algo todos los días. Haré esto inmediatamente, antes de que tu amable email se pierda en mi infinita bandeja de entrada. 

Bien, hoy me encuentro escribiendo esto en la mesa de la cocina de nuestra casa en West Cork, Irlanda. Estoy esperando a un granjero amigo mío llamado John a que venga a vaciar la fosa séptica con su aspirador de caca gigante. Los granjeros son gente ocupada, y nunca se sabe a cuando exactamente se refieren cuando dicen “vendré mañana”. Por supuesto, no todos los días son tan glamurosos como este. Normalmente intento escribir algo, por lo menos una escena de mi olvidada siguiente novela). También estoy trabajando en una sala de guionistas virtual para una serie de Apple en este momento, así de tres a nueve de la tarde estoy ocupado con eso. También tengo que organizar mis obligaciones (y placeres) como padre: La compra, cocinar, limpiar, llevar a mis hijos donde necesiten. Cada día es distinto, dentro de estos parámetros. Igual que los de todo el mundo. 

It is not the first time that music plays a crucial role in one of your novel. How important is music to you and how does if affect your work? 

No es la primera vez que la música juega un papel crucial en una de sus novelas. ¿Cómo de importante es la música para usted y cómo afecta a su trabajo? 

I can’t really imagine a life without music, just as I can’t imagine a life without the colour blue.  Obviously lives without music exist, and obviously blind people live fulfilling, valuable lives without the colour blue.  But the presence of music, and my capacity to enjoy it – at all its levels – is a great gift from the world to humans (and animals.)  To quote the band The Magnetic Fields’ song The Book of Love:

The book of love has music in it –

In fact, that’s where music comes from.

Some of it’s just transcendental –

Some of it’s just really dumb.

No puedo imaginarme la vida sin música, igual que no puedo imaginarme la vida sin el color azul. Obviamente, las vidas ajenas a la música existen, y obviamente la gente ciega viven una vida plena sin el color azul. Pero la presencia de la música y mi capacidad para disfrutarla (a todos los niveles) es un gran regalo del mundo a los humanos (y los animales). Citando la canción ‘The book of love’ de la banda The magnetic fields: 

El libro del amor tiene música 

De hecho, de ahí es de donde la música proviene 

Parte de ella es trascendental 

Y otra parte es simplemente tonta. 

You became a well-known autor, at least in Spain, thanks to the Wachowski’s adaptation of your novel ‘Cloud Atlas’, which was an imppresive work, from the planning point of view, and also taking into account how well you developed the different voices in the novel. How does someone plan and write a novel like ‘Cloud Atlas’? 

Se convirtió en un escritor más conocido, al menos en España, gracias a la adaptación de las hermanas Wachowski de su novela ‘El atlas de las nubes’, que fue un trabajo impresionante desde el punto de vista de la planificación y también teniendo en cuenta lo bien que desarrolló las distintas voces de la novela. ¿Cómo planea y escribe alguien un libro como ‘El atlas de las nubes’? 

 By using a mixture of planning and creative improvisation, like a lot of Art, I guess.  The ‘Russian Doll’ structure came first and was not open to negotiation.  I slotted the component novellas into structure, and realised all of them were about predacity and storytelling.  This made a loose thematic unity.  Then I just carried on writing scenes that followed on from one another, or spoke to one another, or bounced off one another.  When I had enough scenes to tell all the stories, I guessed I was finished.  I still didn’t know if the book would connect with any readers, or if I had just shot my young career in the foot.  That apprehension is a sign you’re on the right path.  Probably :-)

Con una mezcla de planificación y de improvisación creativo, como muchas veces pasa en el Arte, supongo. La estructura de “muñeca rusa” es lo primero que se me ocurrió y era inamovible. Después encajé cada una de las ‘partes-novela’ en la estructura, dándome cuenta de que todas ellas iban sobre alguien que persigue a alguien y sobre contar historias. Esto sirvió como nexo temático, aunque de manera vaga. Después, simplemente continué escribiendo escenas que siguieran a otras, que conectaran con otras, o que repercutan en otras. Cuando tuve suficientes escenas para contar todas las historias, supongo que se podía decir que había acabado. Todavía no sabía si el libro conectaría con algún lector o si ya había dinamitado mi reciente carrera como escritor. Ese miedo es una señal de que estás en el camino correcto. Probablemente. 

Going back to ‘Utopia Avenue’, the impact of british music in culture in the UK and also worldwide, is something that even spanish children study at school (being part of its studies of English as a Second Language). How did you approach such an ambitious novel?  

Volviendo a ‘Utopia Avenue’. El impacto de la música británica en la cultura de Reino Unido (y la cultura en general), es algo que incluso se estudia en la escuela en España (como parte de su formación en la lengua Inglesa). ¿Cómo se aproximó a una novela tan ambiciosa? 

The Spanish school curriculum sounds impressive.  When I was at school, post-Napoleonic Spain hardly existed.  Maybe the UK wouldn’t be so self-injuriously insular if it knew its neighbours’ cultures better.  I approached UTOPIA AVENUE by researching the era, by reading, trying things out, by writing scenes (that phrase again), by noting what was and wasn’t working, by subverting stereotypes (or trying to) of the classic Rock’n’Roll narrative, by failing, and by failing better.  By stamina.

El currículum de primaria en España suena muy bien. Cuando yo estaba en el colegio, la España de después de Napoleón apenas existía. Quizás el Reino Unido no estaría tan aislado si conociera mejor la cultura de sus vecinos. Me enfrenté a ‘Utopia Avenue’ investigando sobre la época, leyendo, intentando cosas nuevas, escribiendo escenas (esa frase otra vez) y anotando lo que funcionaba y lo que no, dándole la vuelta a estereotipos (o intentándolo) de la narrativa del Rock’n’Roll clásico. También me enfrenté a la novela fallando, y después fallando mejor. Por aguante. 

I am sure that with this novel, research was crucial when planning and actually writing it, even more than with other books. Is this a process that you enjoyed? 

Estoy seguro de que en esta novela, la investigación fue crucial a la hora de planificarla y escribirla. Incluso más que con otros libros. ¿Es algo que disfruta? 

For sure.  Reading the biographies, autobiographies and memoirs of musicians, watching interviews on YouTubes, films and documentaries about music, and (kind of) getting paid to do this… To complain about such work would be rude to people who have real jobs with practical value to society.  Like John the Farmer.

Desde luego. Leía biografías, autobiografías y memorias de músicos. Veía entrevistas en Youtube y películas y documentales sobre música. Y todo esto cobrando (en cierta manera). Quejarse de este trabajo sería grosero para aquellos que tienen trabajos de verdad cuya aportación es valiosa para la sociedad. Como mi amigo John el granjero. 

Moving to the screenwriting side of your career. How did the Wachowski sisters approached you in order to collaborate with them for the TV series ‘Sense 8’? 

Yendo a su faceta como guionista. ¿Cómo le contactaron las hermanas Wachowski para colaborar con ellas en la serie ‘Sense 8’? 

Via their agent and via my agent, who contacted me.  After we got to know each other, our communication is more direct.

A través de su agente y de mi agente. Después de que nos conociéramos, nuestra comunicación fue más directa.

Is it writing for the screen something than a modern author needs to do nowadays?  

¿Es escribir guiones algo que es un escritor moderno tiene que hacer en los tiempos que corren? 

I wouldn’t quite say ‘needs to’, but there is a golden of TV streaming right now, and income is always welcome.  Often the best screenwriters are away developing their own shows (more lucrative than adapting someone else’s) so if an author wants to see their own book get adapted, they may need to do it themselves.  Thanks to Lana Wachowski, I went from thinking, ‘No, I can’t do screenwriting’ to ‘Well, maybe I can’ to ‘You know, I really enjoy this.’  To fellow authors thinking of visiting Screenland, I’d just say, Only do unpaid development work on your project; and make sure you own the intellectual property (IP) on what you create.  That way, if your project never gets made (most don’t) you can still use what you’ve written as a novel.

No diría que “tiene” que hacer, pero vivimos una época de oro de la televisión (en streaming en este caso), y la paga siempre es bienvenida. A menudo los guionistas desarrollan sus propios shows (de manera más lucrativa que adaptando el trabajo de otro) así que si un autor quiere ver su propio trabajo adaptado, es posible que tengan que hacerlo ellos mismos. Gracias a Lana Wachowski pasé de pensar: “no, no puedo escribir guiones” a “bueno, quizás sí que pueda. La verdad es que lo disfruto”. Para aquellos compañeros autores que estén pensando en visitar el mundo de la pantalla: sólo haz trabajo no remunerado trabajando en TU proyecto, y asegúrate de que eres el dueño de tu propiedad intelectual. De esa manera, si tu proyecto no se lleva a cabo (la mayoría no lo hacen) al menos puedes utilizar lo que has escrito para una novela. 

Will we see another adaptation of one your books soon? 

¿Veremos la adaptación de otro de sus trabajos pronto? 

Scripts for the first 3 episodes of Utopia Avenue have their stall in the Market of Possible TV Shows.  But it’s a big noisy market, and even in a Golden Age of Streaming, there are more sellers than buyers.  We’ll see eh?

Los guiones de los tres primeros episodios basados en ‘Utopia Avenue’ están en el “Mercado de posibles series”. Pero es un mercado enorme y ruidoso, e incluso en la época dorada del streaming hay más gente vendiendo que comprando. Supongo que ya se verá. 

Was ‘Utopia Avenue’ written during the pandemic? How did COVID-19 affected your life and your work?   

¿Escribió ‘Utopia Avenue’ durante la pandemia? ¿Cómo afectó el COVID-19 a su vida y su trabajo?

 The novel was written pre-pandemic, but was published in English just as Covid-19 went global.  The publication was delayed for a few weeks, but Covid refused to disappear.  Obviously, no book tour.  So, my publicists and I – along with hundreds of others – were obliged to become early co-creators of the Virtual Book Tour.  A different Zoom event each night with a different kind of interview, often with musicians rather than book journalists.  Sometimes I was the interviewer more than I was the interviewee.  I missed the contact with readers, but I probably learnt more from my digital book tour.  Certainly I didn’t miss navigating my way through a different American airport every day, or the gruelling schedules.

Escribí la novela antes de la pandemia y se publicó en Inglés justo cuando la pandemia se volvió global. La publicación se retrasó durante algunas semanas por si pasaba pero la COVID no quería desaparecer, así que se publicó de todos modos. Obviamente, no hubo gira, así que mis publicistas y yo (al igual que otros muchos cientos) nos vimos obligados a convertirnos en co-creadores de “La gira literaria virtual”. Cada noche un evento en Zoom distinto con una clase distinta de entrevista, muchas veces con músicos antes que con periodistas literarios. Algunas veces yo era el entrevistador más que el entrevistado. Lo cierto es que eché de menos el contacto con los lectores, pero aprendí más de esta gira digital. Desde luego no eché de menos abrirme paso a través de un aeropuerto norteamericano distinto cada día, o los agotadores horarios. 

Is there a visit to Spain planned at some point in your near future? 

¿Se contempla una visita a España en su futuro cercano? 

Yes. I can't really say more than that at the moment

Sí, pero no puedo adelantar más por ahora. 

Last question, very usual as well in the website ‘Chica Sombra’. Mr. Mitchell, are you happy? (we mean all the best with this question).

What a profound and simple question.  I have more than my fair share of those moments of conscious, acute happiness where you think, “Thank you.”  Thanks to my family, a few friends, my health and my environment, I live with a general level of contentment that I don’t really deserve.  My only request to the Universe today is functioning septic tank…

Qué pregunta tan sencilla y tan profunda. Tengo muchos más momentos de los que me corresponder de esa felicidad aguda y consciente donde piensas: “gracias”. Gracias a mi familia, algunos amigos, mi salud y lo que me rodea, vivo con un nivel de alegría que realmente no merezco. Mi único deseo al universo hoy es tener una fosa séptica funcional.
